More often than not we tend to take path of least resistance in life. We give up too soon or we just react to the situations without reevaluating and possibly looking for different solutions. In the book Thinking fast and slow, author Daniel Kahneman talks about how our mind is designed & refers as two systems, System 1 and System 2. System 1 - operates quickly, with little or no effort. On other hand System 2- operates logically with effort full mental activities. He further talks about how we all face the choice between "reacting" and "responding" to what happens around us and to us.
We often choose easy way out when put in pressure or through rough situations. And how system 1 is in control when we are in cognitive thinking mode. He explains with many scenario to test our attitude and response when given a complex situation .
As humans, we are all risk averse, we look for guidance, opinions and others experience. In doing that, we forget what we think and what we feel about the circumstances. Yes, life is too short to experience everything to learn lessons. Smart thing to do is rely and learn from someone else's experience, saves time and energy. But what I am more afraid of is , eventually we become week and dependent, loose our ability to take right decisions when required. From our kids school admissions to which university they should be going to is based off of others opinions. When it is important to know your surroundings through your neighbors, its equally important to not depend on their opinions on which university is good for your children. Be willing to do your homework. Be willing to take the road less traveled.
While every one are competing to come First , why don't we strive for excellence. I promise, it gets less crowded when you head towards the first row seating. There are not many people who take the road less traveled.
"Two roads diverged in a wood and I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference" - Robert Frost.
